Your Thermostat Can Save You Money

Posted: March 7, 2022 by Andy

Here in Northeast Ohio, as with most homes in the USA, heating and cooling consume about half of your home's total energy consumption. So, if you're looking for an area to make a few tweaks, it's wise to take a look at your thermostat and comfort habits. Of course, if you're willing to put on a sweater or use a fan now and then, you'll save even more. Here's how to save big money on your energy bill with your thermostat.

Adjust your temperature setting

According to the Department of Energy, simply setting your thermostat at least 10 degrees higher for eight hours a day can lower your energy costs by up to 10% per year. Naturally, these savings will add up even more in the spring and fall, when the outside temperatures are milder than in the summer and winter.

Simply keep your house warmer or cooler than normal when you go to work or go out for the day, and only heat or cool the house when you're at home. Generally speaking, the smaller the difference between the outdoor and indoor temperatures, the lower your energy bills will be.

Programmable thermostat

Strategic temperature adjustments are where a programmable thermostat makes the most sense. You can easily schedule times when you want the heat or AC to turn on. Programmable units can store weekly or even daily settings to make switching between temperatures convenient and straightforward from your smartphone or other devices.

During cold weather, try lowering your thermostat to 68° F while you're at home, but turn it down further when you're sleeping or away from home. In hot weather, set your thermostat to 78° F when you're home and 85° F when you're away. You could save $100 or more per year by adjusting your thermostat in this way.

Neighborly Tip: If you have pets, pause to consider the safety and comfort of your animals. Be sure to set a bearable and safe temperature for your pets. Not sure what range is best? Your veterinarian can help you keep Farfel and Mittens happy and healthy.

Factors that affect your heating and cooling

Your home's energy efficiency and the savings that you'll get from adjusting your thermostat are impacted by various factors in your house, including the following:

Your house's age. The age of your home can determine the quality of your insulation. A well-insulated home will hold warm and cool air longer, making the heating and cooling period faster and more efficient.

Your thermostat's location. HVAC performance and efficiency are affected by where your thermostat resides. For your system to operate at peak efficiency, your thermostat should be on an interior wall and away from direct sunlight, drafts, furniture, doorways, and windows.

Your windows. While everyone loves to let the beautiful sunlight in, your home's windows affect how much hot or cold air is in your home. In the heat of summer, it's wise to close your blinds and curtains during the heat of the day to help your central AC run more efficiently. In the winter, warm sunlight is your system's best friend, so leave your curtains open to let the sunlight in and naturally help warm your home.

Your habits. Be cautious when you're trying to cool your home quickly. If you set the target temperature too low, you can cause your HVAC system to work too hard, and it'll potentially wear out its components more quickly. To avoid excessive cooling and unnecessary repair expenses, set your thermostat to gradually cool or heat your home.

Your home's humidity level. While adjusting your thermostat appropriately will save you money and has a significant impact on your heating and cooling, the amount of airborne moisture in your home has a greater effect on your family's comfort. If your thermostat best practices aren't quite achieving the comfort level you're after, consider adding a humidifer or dehumidifier to complete your home's HVAC system.

Your HVAC equipment. It's wise to be aware of any manufacturer recalls for your home's heating and cooling equipment. Ignoring recall notices may cost you money, or worse, may put your family's safety in jeopardy! Bookmark our Blog and your equipment manufacturer's website(s) to stay informed.

Save on energy costs with Hey Neighbor Heating & Cooling

When it comes to saving money by raising or lowering your thermostat's temperature, it all comes down to how much cold or heat you can tolerate. If you're willing to put on an extra layer or two, you could double your savings compared to wasting that energy, especially when your family isn't home.

Save on your monthly energy bills and help keep your HVAC system running at peak efficiency by calling the pros at Hey Neighbor Heating & Cooling to install a modern, programmable thermostat in your home.
